Catalytically active nickel ˆ110‰ surfaces in growth of carbon tubular structures
نویسندگان
چکیده
Recent interest in the growth of aligned carbon nanotube films using transition metal catalysts has led to questions concerning the growth mechanism involved. In our experiment carbon tubules grown using Ni catalysts exhibit a preferred orientation relative to the catalytically active surfaces of Ni. The axial directions of the tubular structure are mainly parallel to the ^110& and ^042& directions of Ni. The faceted shape of the Ni particles determines the intrinsic structure of the tubules. A mechanism involving spiral growth is proposed to explain the nucleation and growth of such tubules. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. @S0003-6951~00!01910-0#

Templated Growth of Carbon Nanotubes on Nickel Loaded Mesoporous MCM-41 and MCM-48 Molecular Sieves
Chemical vapor deposition was employed to synthesize carbon nanotubes with Ni-loaded MCM-41 and MCM-48 as catalysts and acetylene as precursor at 750°C. Mesoporous Ni MCM-41 and Ni MCM-48 molecular sieves were synthesized by a hydrothermal method and were characterized by XRD and N2 adsorption isotherm. The catalytically synthesized carbon materials were characterized with Raman spectroscopy, N...
متن کاملCatalytically Graphitized Electrospun Carbon Nanofibers Adorned with Nickel Nanoparticles for Catalysis Applications
Catalytically graphitized electrospun carbon nanofibers adorned uniformly with fine nickel nanoparticles were successfully prepared. The procedure was based on the electrospinning technique and the use of nickel precursor to create both graphitized nanofibers and nickel nanoparticles under a relatively low-temperature heat treatment. The X-ray diffraction and Raman results clearly proved cataly...
متن کاملElectrosynthesized Reduced Graphene Oxide-Supported Platinum, Platinum-Copper and Platinum-Nickel Nanoparticles on Carbon-Ceramic Electrode for Electrocatalytic Oxidation of Ethanol in Acidic Media
In this work, the electrocatalytic oxidation of ethanol was studied in acidic media at the wholly electrosynthesized nanocomposites: platinum and its alloys (copper and nickel) anoparticles/reduced graphene oxide on the carbon-ceramic electrode (Pt/rGO/CCE, Pt-Cu/rGO/CCE, and Pt-Ni/rGO/CCE electrocatalysts). The electrosynthesized nanocomposites were characterized by scan...
متن کاملFabrication of ordered catalytically active nanoparticles derived from block copolymer micelle templates for controllable synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes.
We report the use of the block copolymer micelle approach to produce various transition metal nanoparticles such as iron, cobalt, and nickel with precisely controlled size and spacing. These uniformly sized catalyst nanoparticles derived from the block copolymer micelle approach have enabled the synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with narrow size distribution. Because of the excellent film fo...
متن کاملEffect of Microstructure of Ferrous Substrate on Porosity of Electroless Nickel Coating
The corrosion resistance of electroless nickel (EN) coatings on ferrous substrates is affected by coating porosity. Carbon and iron carbide are present in the microstructure of ferrous alloys. If the sites of carbon and iron carbide are not catalytically active to EN deposition as the rest of substrate surface, there is a possibility of pore formation on these sites. In the present study, the r...
